THE RACE - ISSUE 5
Algiers: Gateway to the Land

Algiers is a very large city with over 2.6 million people. Algiers is the capital and the most important city in Algeria.  The country's administrative center, main harbor, and largest university are also in Algiers.

A rich history and a strong cultural diversity make up Algeria's capital which is divided into three parts: a French division (French architecture, streets, and theaters), the old Arab area (where many poor people live), and the suburbs (where more affluent businessmen and professionals live).

Algiers was originally a Phoenician trading port over three thousand years ago.  Different civilizations conquered the city, such as the Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arab dynasties, and the French.

Throughout its history, Algiers has played a pivotal role in the affairs of various nations.  In World War II, Algiers became the headquarters of the Allied forces of North Africa.  As a free capital, Algiers led the way in negotiations and mediations between differing Arab countries.

Today, tragically Algiers and the whole country has been unraveling in a seven-year spiral of violence and deprivation.  This capital which helped to bring peace to others has been at a "state of war" with itself.

Algiers is indeed a gateway city in the sense that it is the heart and heartbeat of Algeria.  We as Christians have the opportunity to pray for the lives and souls of the people living in Algiers.  Let us lift our voices to the Lord in united intercession that the Prince of Peace would truly dwell among those in this war-torn capital!
