THE RACE - ISSUE 6
A Nation at War
Most of us in the West are untouched by war. We can go
to the store, buy groceries, and visit friends' homes without any fear of
dying from these activities. Our lives are not affected by daily reports of
car bombs and genocide.
We are at peace.
Halfway around the
globe, millions live in a state of fear and anxiety unlike anything that we
have ever imagined. People, like us, who wish to go the store, buy
groceries, and visit friends' homes without fear of dying from these
activities. But who do. Tragically, we in the West do not know or care
about these who live in distress.
Algeria, a nation that has experienced
a history of pain and bloodshed, is at a state of war. This state of war is
not with any other nation, no outside invader, and no foreign army. This war
is from within and is for the future of Algeria. Algeria has been gripped by
violence since 1992 when the authorities cancelled a general election in
which radical Islamists had taken a commanding lead. Since then, more than
110,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
Tales of car bombs in
the capital, whole villages being massacred, school teachers beheaded in
front of their classes, babies being ripped from their mothers' wombs- all
paint a grisly picture of nation torn by radical Islamic fundamentalism and
military authoritarianism.
As the prophet Habbakuk once cried out to God
so too do we for the people of Algeria.
"How long, O Lord, will I call
for help, And Thou wilt not hear? I cry out to Thee, "Violence!" Yet Thou
dost not save. Why dost Thou make me see iniquity, And cause me to look on
wickedness? Yes, destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and
contention arises. Therefore, the law is ignored And justice is never
upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore, justice comes out
perverted." (Hab. 1:2-4)
And the Lord's response is still the
same!
"Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I
am doing something in your days-- You would not believe if you were
told."
Indeed, God is doing a mighty work even in the midst of such
agony!
Small groups are appearing in different parts of the country to
study the Bible. People are questioning Islam- searching for hope and an
intimate walk with God. Even the government and political leaders are
working to resolve the problems which have plagued Algeria for a
decade.
Today is truly the day of salvation for the Arabs of Algeria!!!
Join us in passionate intercession for Algeria that God would use this crisis
to bring this people to faith in Him!
