THE RACE - ISSUE 18
Tamanrasset: The Capital of the Sahara

I would like to introduce you to one of the most intriguing cities in Algeria- or in the whole world for that matter.

Tamanrasset.  Capital of the Sahara.

Forget what you might have thought about the Sahara Desert being totally "deserted."  There is life.  Thousands of people.  Commerce. Families. Activity. Needed hearts.

Tamanrasset is situated at the lower end of the Hoggar Mountains (yes, mountains in the desert.).  Its yearly temperature only varies from 36°C/96°F in June and 21°C/70°F in January.  With its low rainfall total & mild humidity, Tamanrasset offers a pleasant climate.

And what a view!

A short trip by 4X4 can take you to the Hoggar Mountains with Mount Tahat its highest peak.  This mountain has snow all year round (yes, snow in the desert.).  Interesting archaeological fact: the earliest human artifacts in Africa where found here, cave paintings and tools, proving that animals and fertile areas once dominated much of the present-Sahara.

And what a people!

Over 40,000 inhabitants dwell in Tamanrasset round (yes, people in the desert.): Algerian Arabs, Africans from neighboring countries, and Tuareg.. It's the largest "Tuareg" city in the world.  The Tuareg are a nomadic people travelling across the Saharan countries of North and West Africa. A most interesting people, the Tuareg dress in stunning blue robes and can navigate across the inscrutable desert with facility through an ancient knowledge of landmarks passed on from father to son.

And what a need!

Tragically, little is being done to reach the peoples of southern Algeria (and yes, spiritual darkness in the desert.).  Lack of workers.  Lack of vision.  Lack of resources.  The work to bring the Good News to these beautiful people is very difficult- but must be done!

"The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose."  (Isaiah 35:1)  AMEN!!!

Please, intercede for the peoples of Tamanrasset.  Pray for the River of Life to flood their spiritual desert of lostness.  Also, please, pray for missionaries and mission organizations that God would show them ways to reach the "unreachable."

No one is too far from the love of Jesus Christ.  Oh, that the city of Tamanrasset would become the Christian Capital of the Sahara!
