THE RACE - ISSUE 23
Biskra: The Crossroad
In northeastern Algeria, on the edge of the Great
Eastern Dune, lies the town of Biskra. With about 140,000 people, Biskra is
a major trading post for many desert nomads and merchants from the north.
A fertile oasis graces the desolate landscape with its refreshing waters. A
miniature Garden of Eden. Dates. Olives. Pomegranates.
Biskra's role in
North African history has been a constant site of military defense and
assault. The Romans used the area around Biskra as an army outpost. The
Arab invasion of North Africa traveled across the semi-arid oasis of Biskra
into central Algeria and Morocco. The oldest known Arabic inscription in
North Africa is on a tomb to Oqba been Nafi, the great Arab leader. Even
the French used Biskra as a major military station, Fort Saint
Germain.
This little paradise surrounded by desert has known military
conquest and social isolation. Yet, Christ in His mercy and grace is
conquering Biskra with His love and changing spiritual isolation into
redeeming reconciliation.
In this crossroad of cultures and history, a few
Algerians have come to faith there. They have a wonderful location for
ministry and witness. But they need all of us praying for them and for
the many who have yet to hear the Good News. Indeed, "Let the nomads of
the desert bow before him!" (Psalms 72:9) And not only the nomads but also
everyone!
Please, pray for the small group of believers in the area. Pray
that they would be encouraged and bold. Pray that Christ would bring many
others in Biskra in the Kingdom. Pray that Biskra would be known as a
Light to all who travel there.
Until all may hear-
