THE RACE - ISSUE 33 May 2001
A Need for Peace

For the past couple of weeks, tensions and riots have pitted Algerian against Algerian in the capital Algiers and in the Kabylia region, home to the Kabyle Berbers- Algeria's largest minority. Police arrested a couple of Kabyle youth after demonstrations in April commemorating the "Berber Spring" of 1988.

In that year, protests and fighting broke out between the government and Kabyles wanting greater recognition of their language and culture. This year, one of these youth died while in police custody under questionable circumstances. Immediately, riots began in a couple of major cities in Kabylia. Also, protesters staged a peaceful march in the capital a few days later.

The president has ordered an inquiry into the matter by a governmental commission. Many Kabyle desire the inquiry to be overseen by the UN. Now days later and over 40 killed (and a few hundred injured), tensions remain high and demands for peace and justice continue to be voiced.

In a day of prejudice, intrigue, and anxiety, only the Prince of Peace can bring lasting harmony and civility to Kabylia, Algiers, and all of Algeria. Please, pray the God will use this situation to open the hearts of many Algerians to the message of hope

Pray that from death, life would come, and from calamity, faith.

"(As it is written, "A father of many nations have I made you") in the sight of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist." Romans 4: 17
