THE RACE - ISSUE 60 April 2003
The Power of the Book

For years, an unfortunate Algerian girl has tragically endured oppression from an evil spirit. From time to time, she would suffer illness, convulsions and violent movements at the hands of this demon. Many times, the father would beseech the local “marabout” (a holy man who acts like a shaman) for help. The marabout would expel the evil spirit who would leave . . .

. . . for a while.

This cycle of possession, convulsions/sickness and exorcism continued for most of the young girl’s life. In this family’s village, there was a small fellowship of Christians. The father had received a New Testament, which he had read a little. The message of this book had interested him but not to the point of truly challenging his beliefs or practices . . .

. . . until now.

She wailed and thrashed about again. “Clear the furniture! Hold her!” Weeping, he held his convulsing demon-possessed daughter. The marabout’s work has never had a lasting effect, he thought to himself. Then, he saw the New Testament sitting on a shelf across the room. He took it, and said, “I ask the God of this book to heal my daughter!” Instantly, she fell limp in his arms. She slept with a peace she had never known. The evil spirit had left her . . .

. . . never to return again.

Please, pray that God would continue to work wonders in the lives of Algerians, bringing them to faith in His power and love. Pray on behalf of the many who live under the oppression of demonic forces in Algeria today.
